As we approach the end of the year, our office has received many requests to repeat three recent webinars:

Webinar #27: Implementing ‘Growing Success’ in H.S. Mathematics Courses
May 16, 2012, 7:00-8:00 PM (Ontario Time)

This webinar uses examples from Grade 9 and 10 mathematics courses to explore the application of Growing Success to mathematics instruction and assessment. We discuss Assessment for Learning and Assessment as Learning in detail. In this discussion, we explore how the seven fundamental principles of assessment can be applied in the classroom, and how achievement of curriculum expectations can be assessed through student products, conversations and observations. In conclusion, we will explore briefly some guiding principles of Assessment of Learning.

Webinar #28: Assessing Using Professional Judgment
May 23, 2012, 7:00-8:00 PM (Ontario Time)

This webinar focuses on the importance of assessing with accuracy, so that student grades properly reflect achievement. Accuracy in assessment of learning means:

  • being clear regarding the purpose of the assessment
  • being clear regarding learning goals
  • ensuring categories are addressed in a balanced manner
  • keeping in mind the ”big idea” when building an assessment task
  • using assessment tools (e.g. rubric, checklist) that are appropriate to the task
  • recording results of less traditional assessments (e.g. observations, conversations) while
  • ensuring consistency and fairness
  • gathering sufficient evidence
  • to ensure consistency and fairness

The webinar features practical exemplars of assessments of student products, observations and conversations, and addresses the effective and appropriate use of rubrics. A sample assessment policy is shown, which schools can use as a model to support consistency among teaching staff.

Webinar #29: 15-Point Ministry of Education Inspection Checklist
May 30, 2012, 7:00-8:00 PM (Ontario Time)

This webinar focuses on the ins and outs of the ministry inspection. Not only does the presentation tell you what to look for in your ministry inspection, but it will also inform you where to look to ensure your staff is following the mandate put forward by the Ministry of Education for inspections.

NEW WEBINAR SERIES: Assessment For/As/Of Learning in Classroom Practice, Parts 1 & 2

This series of two Webinars focuses on assessment and evaluation in the Ministry of Education’s newest policy document - Growing Success – that private schools are required to implement. The Webinars will take you step by step through the three types of assessments: Assessment for LearningAssessment as Learning and Assessment of Learning. We will take an in-depth look at each type of assessment and the implications for the classroom, and we will provide tools to help in their implementation.

Webinar #25, part one, deals with the use of assessment information for the purpose of improving learning. We will look at the essential steps in Assessment for Learning and Assessment as Learning, including their application to assessing students’ development of learning skills and work habits.

Webinar #26, part two in the series, focuses on evaluation that is based on Assessment of Learning and looks closely at the process involved in gathering evidence through observations, conversations, and student products, as well as in judging the quality of student work. Taking such a comprehensive view of achievement has significant implications for grading and reporting, which we will touch on in detail.
