The First Nation Schools Division of Professional Development Seminars (PDS) is happy to inform administrators of First Nation schools in Ontario of its new project: Making the Ontario Curriculum Relevant to First Nation Students while meeting Ministry of Education Course Expectations. This project is being pursued under the leadership of Mr. Jim Sebastian, former Education Officer in the Ontario Ministry of Education.
At the present time a COMPLETE – READY-TO-USE English program, Grade 10 Applied, ENG2P, is available for all First Nation schools, to be taught in the upcoming school year, September, 2009.
The COMPLETE – READY-TO-USE English program for ENG2P includes:
- Course outline (developed according to the Private Schools Inspection Guidelines)
- Unit Plans:
- Land & Identity
- Leadership
- Heroes
- Nature & the Environment
- Myth & Legends
- Lesson plans (70 minutes each) related to each of the units (adding to a total of 110 hours of instruction)
- Assessment and evaluation plan for each of the units and the entire course (based on the four categories of achievement: Knowledge & Understanding, Thinking, Communication, and Application)
- Assessment and evaluation tools (tests, assignments, projects, etc.) for each unit and the entire course
- Culminating activities and assessment tasks (including rubrics)
- Answer key for each assessment tool (for teacher use)
- One set of textbooks
- Calculating tool to calculate student marks for the course, based on the four categories of achievement
The COMPLETE – READY-TO-USE English program has been developed especially to meet the specific and unique needs of First Nation students in Ontario, and to help teachers and principals meet Ministry of Education requirements for successful school inspections.
The COMPLETE – READY-TO-USE English program is based almost solely on material written by First Nation writers. Educators from the Department of English at the University of Waterloo, the Department of Aboriginal Education at Lakehead University, special education educators from public boards in Ontario, and educators and principals from First Nation schools in Ontario have all collaborated to develop this program.
