PLAR Challenge
The “challenge” process is where students’ prior learning is assessed for the purpose of granting a credit for a Grade 10, 11 or 12 course. Students in Grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 may apply to challenge for credit for certain Grade 10, 11 or 12 courses.
PDS can set up the process for your school. PDS can also arrange for the credit to be granted through the Halton Learning Centre, a registered and inspected private school in Ontario.
To ensure integrity in the PLAR process, PDS will:
- develop a PLAR application form
- evaluate each application in consultation with the student and appropriate school staff
- develop formal tests and other assessment strategies
- conduct the testing
- evaluate and report on the student’s performance
PLAR Equivalency
The “equivalency” process involves the assessment of credentials and other appropriate documentation from jurisdictions outside Ontario for the purpose of granting credit. PDS recognizes the challenge for schools of ensuring consistency when students present out-of-province credentials.
To help your school achieve consistency with its assessments, PDS will:
- establish a procedure
- develop a template to record assessment results
- assess credentials
- determine the number of equivalent credits to be granted
- record credits granted on the appropriate form
