| Lunch & Learn is designed to be an informative and useful advanced forum of discussion and learning for principals, department heads and key teachers of private schools. During a two hour meal, participants will be invited to listen to a thirty-minute presentation on a relevant topic chosen for the day, followed by a discussion and exchange of ideas. It is a great opportunity for participants to ask questions and learn how their colleagues are solving school challenges. This forum also provides an excellent opportunity for networking, sharing of ideas, and learning from each other’s knowledge and experience. | |

The Presenter: Alan Wolfish, Q.C. was Director of Legal Services with the Ministries of Education and Training, Colleges and Universities for sixteen years. As a sole practitioner, he currently serves as education law consultant to the firm of Fogler, Rubinoff LLP and also represents clients in the private education sector. Mr. Wolfish brings a wealth of experience and first-hand knowledge of legal issues relating to the education sector, and is able to present these issues to a lay audience in an engaging and understandable manner. The Workshop: This pertinent learning opportunity will focus on some of the difficult legal issues private schools must be prepared to manage. Our discussion will begin with consideration of events that might precipitate a school’s reporting of disclosures or concerns to community social agencies or the police, and will carry on to include such issues as parental harassment, case-law related to student suspension and expulsion, doctrine of duty of care and potential liability around this, and privacy issues and laws. Opportunity will be provided for general questions of whole group interest to be posed. |

The Presenter: Ronnie Miller received his M.Ed. in Educational Administration, and Ph.D. in History & Philosophy of Education from the University of Toronto – OISE. Dr. Miller taught history at the High School and University levels and he is the author of two books published by academic presses. During the last 25 years Dr. Miller has been involved with private schools in South Africa, Australia and Canada (the Halton Learning Centres). Dr. Miller is the Executive Director of Professional Development Seminars. |
| The Workshop: In this seminar Dr. Miller will discuss the development of course outlines, unit and lesson plans, appropriate assessment tools, evaluation of student work, performance tasks, working with rubrics, and report card writing. Dr. Miller will give examples and offer templates that work well to support these processes in small schools. This seminar is designed primarily for NEW teachers and administrators who have limited working experience in private schools in Ontario. It is an important seminar for those preparing for their initial inspection. |
